I Choose You!
Sometimes I amuse myself with my post titles. And sometimes I think I’m the only one amused by my post titles. Regardless, I digress…
As touched on before, ANY music can be the right music for you. I’ve seen girls get down to classic rock, trance, rap, metal—whatever. I spend a lot of time (partly because I’m already a music geek, so I enjoy doing this) considering the music I dance to.
This takes trial and error, which is why you see me post so many songs that I want to try out for stage. If you’re heavy into your performance, too, and want to pick your songs, the best advice I can give is to ask yourself two questions:
1) Does this song make me feel sexy?
2) Does it let me dance in a flattering way?
1 - No matter how good a song is, if it doesn’t instinctively make you feel gorgeous, or at least like you could shag to it, or give your lover some provocative foreplay, it’s probably not the song for you.
2 - Flattering to you. I am a hip-driven, Shakira-style dancer and a little risque with my moves. If a song is too slow, if it’s 2 minutes of poses and slithering for 1 minute of hips-and-ass, it’s not flattering to me.
Case in point: There are a number of songs I could discuss, but I’ll pick Heaven’s a Lie by Lacuna Coil. I would bang to this song. This song makes me feel sexy. I love the idea of this song. So while it fits part 1… I can’t do it on stage. Not enough dynamics
A second case: I danced to a number of ‘fun’ hip-beat songs, like Church of Hot Addiction and Buttons, but I killed them all from my sets because they didn’t make me feel as sexy on the pole (very different than bedroom or dancefloor) as others.
This is why some core songs I will just never stop dancing to. My first song was Personal Jesus and I still dance to it. Luckily I’ve acquired at least a solid 4 others I probably won’t give up, while I’ll rotate out others every few months.
